Quand on pense aux Clash, on pense à leur musique si extraordinairement variée pour des punks, mais on pense aussi à leur engagement politique. Leur esprit Do it Yourself, apologie de l'esprit punk et leur rebellion limite communiste dans une Angleterre en plein marasme conservateur. Pourtant, à la lecture de cet excellent ouvrage, notre vision sur ce groupe change énormément, et l'on se rend vite compte qu'a l'image d'un Malcom Mc Laren pour les Pistols, les idées des Clash venaient en grande partie de leur manager Bernie Rhodes, et que sans lui, l'esprit aurait peut-être été un peu plus fade. Par ailleur, tout comme les Pistols, ce leader caché sera aussi le boulet d'un groupe pris dans un mouvement qu'il finira par ne plus contrôler. En outre, la véritable image de certains membres du groupe est plutôt décevante, et à l'encontre de l'idéologie punk... bref, ce livre n'est pas tendre, mais reste objectif (nous ne sommes que des hommes!!) et l'on comprend mieux comment les Clash tout comme le punk, ce sont autodétruis dans de petites guerres bien mesquines. C'est à la fois divin de se retrouver plongé dans cette époque, mais aussi terriblement nostalgique. Très bon livre pour tous les amateurs de la grande histoire du Rock.
