Dans son style semi-romanesque, Jules Michelet brosse un portrait étonnamment lucide de la sorcière sur un arrière-plan brutal du moyen âge et de la féodalité. C'est un véritable tableau à la manière de Jheronimus Bosch avec des messes noires, des immenses sabbats délirants, des couvents pleins d'hystériques, des procès monstrueux, des tortures abominables (l'in pace) et des exécutions nauséabondes (jusqu'à 400 êtres humains sur le même bûcher).

La féodalité et l'Eglise
Pour l'immense majorité de la population (les serfs), le régime féodal était un véritable enfer, où personne n'était en sûreté. Les êtres humains étaient cloués à la terre sans possibilité d'émigration. Autour d'eux, ils ne voyaient que des maladies, des guerres et des cadavres.
Le clergé avec son Diable et son enfer était omniprésent. En plus, le Deuxième Etat était rongé par des luttes internes entre le clergé, les moines dépendant de Rome et les jésuites.
Dans cet univers `terrible, qui n'est que larmes et sang', la femme, maudite depuis Eve, n'était que de la chair impure.

L'Eglise et la Raison
L'Eglise s'est toujours opposée à l'indépendance spirituelle de l'homme, à toute invention et à toute innovation. Elle a `maudit le prodigieux édifice des sciences.' Pour Elle, toutes les sciences étaient des incarnations de Satan, `un coupable logicien', qui n'a aucun respect pour le droit clérical.
